After about an hour of half-heartedly trying to play cards with Toby, we both decide its best if we have some alone time to process the day’s events. While Toby went off to God knows where, I decide a midnight snack would be just the thing. Walking through the halls of the house, I run into a few Guardians lingering, some engaged in hushed conversations, others on their way to bed for the night or outside for a walk under the surprisingly clear night sky. No one seems too keen on stopping to chat, and I am unbelievably thankful for it.

As I round the corner to the kitchen, a wave of extreme sadness washes over me like I have never felt before. Hurrying my steps, I make it to the door before I hear my Aunt Viv and Uncle Seamus whispering rapidly. Most of the time, I’d have turned around and left them to their privacy, but something tells me I’m needed tonight.

Next to the kitchen island stands my aunt and uncle, tears running down Aunt Viv’s face and Seamus looking confused and hurt. As Aunt Viv sees me, Uncle Seamus turns and walks out the door into the night, without even looking in my direction. I guess their conversation was over, anyway.

Aunt Viv simply crumples onto the stone floor, totally and utterly defeated. I rush over and throw an arm around her shoulders.

″Aunt Viv!” I cry, the power of her sadness overwhelming me completely as I, too, start to weep. “Oh, Aunt Viv. Surely it can’t be that bad?” I plead with her.

″He can’na trust me now, can he?” She sniffs breathlessly. “Says he has’na a clue who he married. An’ how could I no’ tell him all this time?” Her head goes down, beautiful curls falling into her face and hiding her from view.

I take a beat, compose myself as best I can with her emotions battering at me. “Uncle Seamus will come around, you’ll see. I know he will,” I try to reassure her.

″Oh, Lor, my sweet dove. Aye. I know he will forgive me; I know how he loves me.” She sighs, wiping a hand down her face. “But the real question, do I be deservin’ of it?” She looks up at me with eyes that betray how vulnerable she is right now.

″Of course you do!” I grab her up in the biggest hug, my head on top of her hair. “If I can forgive all of you, hiding who and what I am my entire life, if I can understand…” I trail off.

Well damn, I have forgiven them, haven’t I? I hadn’t even realized I was no longer angry with my family for all the secrets kept, all the lies told.

Viv barks out a laugh, leans back, and looks me dead in the eye. She’s a sight, tears streaking down, a mixture of surprise, heartbreak, and disbelief on her beautiful face.

″Well then. I admit I did’na expect yer forgiveness near so quick either, lass.” She sighs and pulls herself up to her feet, reaching a hand to help me up.
